Who We Are
Los Alamos Family Council was incorporated in 1962 as a small counseling center. We have expanded that counseling center to include a full range of counseling services for mental health and substance abuse. Funding at LAFC Counseling Center is from New Mexico Medicaid (Centennial Care), New Mexico Department of Health, United Way of Northern New Mexico, and donations from private donors. There is a reduced rate for those who are self-pay and extremely flexible payment plans are available. We are located in Los Alamos but serve clients from the entire region.
What We Do
Los Alamos Family Council is more than a counseling center. LAFC also operates two Youth Activity Centers.
The Youth Activity Centers are a natural part of LAFCs mission to improve social and emotional well-being. The programming focus of the Youth Activity Centers is on youth resiliency, and providing a safe, supervised environment with positive adult role models.
There are two Youth Activity Centers (YAC)-one in Los Alamos on the east side of Ashley Pond and one in White Rock located behind the White Rock Library. The program provides free supervised activities for youth in grades 3-8. Last year there were 14,000+ visits. The YAC is open every day after school, during school in-service days and vacations, and during the summer. The YACs are closed on weekends and legal holidays. Funding for YAC programs comes primarily from LA County, United Way, and private donations.
The Counseling Center supports the mission with emphasis on counseling, education, and prevention. We provide mental and behavioral therapy, as well as medication management, for clients. The Counseling Center is the original core of LAFC services and continues to offer a full range of behavioral health services for Los Alamos and surrounding counties.
