Volunteer: Community Bigs (Mentors) in Los Alamos

Youth in our community have an abundance of potential - they just need someone in their corner to help them realize it. There are hundreds of kids in Northern New Mexico who are waiting for a mentor who will stand with them and help them ignite their potential.

Big Brothers Big Sisters exists to create positive change in our community by matching youth with adult mentors to build powerful friendships. Volunteers tell us that being a mentor is one of the best experiences that they have ever had. It’s also not as time consuming as they thought it would be.

Here are some things to think about:

We ask that mentors see their mentees for at least four hours a month and commit to volunteering for at least a year. You would do the same things with your mentee that you would do with your friends: Go to the movies. Play games. Go out to eat. Just hang out! It’s that easy. You are not alone in this. Your Big Brothers Big Sisters’ case manager and a network of volunteers will be there with resources, opportunities and support.

Interview, training, & background check will be required.

Volunteer: Spanish Speaking Intake Volunteer

Intake volunteers call prospective clients (people in need who have reached out for help) and input their information into our intake form. They listen to clients’ stories, provide referrals, follow up for more information, and inform them of the type of help we can provide. Intake volunteering is Self Help's most challenging and rewarding volunteer job. No social work experience is needed, but interpersonal skills are very helpful. This is a remote opportunity and can be done from anywhere with just a phone and computer. We do thoroughly train each intake volunteer; for this reason, we request prospective intake volunteers be able to commit a few hours most weeks for at least a few months. Due to the nature of the work, this volunteer position unfortunately cannot be undertaken by minors or used to fulfill a court-mandated community service requirement.

Volunteer: Community Bigs (Mentors) in Espanola

Youth in our community have an abundance of potential - they just need someone in their corner to help them realize it. There are hundreds of kids in Central New Mexico who are waiting for a mentor who will stand with them and help them ignite their potential.
