Opportunities From: Volunteer Los Alamos

Volunteer: "Lunch Buddies" in Los Alamos and White Rock Elementary Schools

Big Brothers Big Sisters is searching for adult mentors to serve as "lunch buddies" for the upcoming school year. Lunch buddies are matched with a child mentee they meet with once a week during the child's lunch and recess periods.

Lunch buddies often enjoy playing board games, working on craft projects, playing on the playground, and talking together. This opportunity gives the child some one-on-one support and attention during their school week and something to look forward to each week.

We currently have lunch buddy programs in every Los Alamos and White Rock elementary and we are in need of more mentors!

Volunteer: Community Bigs (Mentors) in Los Alamos

Youth in our community have an abundance of potential - they just need someone in their corner to help them realize it. There are hundreds of kids in Northern New Mexico who are waiting for a mentor who will stand with them and help them ignite their potential.

Big Brothers Big Sisters exists to create positive change in our community by matching youth with adult mentors to build powerful friendships. Volunteers tell us that being a mentor is one of the best experiences that they have ever had. It’s also not as time consuming as they thought it would be.

Here are some things to think about:

We ask that mentors see their mentees for at least four hours a month and commit to volunteering for at least a year. You would do the same things with your mentee that you would do with your friends: Go to the movies. Play games. Go out to eat. Just hang out! It’s that easy. You are not alone in this. Your Big Brothers Big Sisters’ case manager and a network of volunteers will be there with resources, opportunities and support.

Interview, training, & background check will be required.
